Christmas bauble:  St Lucia

13 December is a very special day in Sweden. On the name day of St Lucia, the Scandinavians commemorate the former bringer of light from Syracuse, who is said to have secretly supplied hidden Christians with food during the persecution of Christians in the third century. In order to have both hands free for bread and jugs of water and still be able to see in the dark, legend has it that she wore a wreath of burning candles on her head.

Girls still wear this wreath of lights during the festive procession on St Lucy's Day. As a glass figure for the Christmas tree, Lucia is also very traditional: in a matt shimmering, white, long dress, the cuffs and hem of which are dusted with silver glitter, the young lady with the angelic face and blonde, slightly wavy hair seems to float. She carries a lit candle in her hands; the others on a green wreath decorated with red, berry-like glitter dots on her head. The candles are glittered in white and the flames flicker in red against an orange-coloured background.
